Zara Hartshorn Cutis Laxa Condition …A 15-Year-Old Girl looks like a 45-Year Old Grandma

Zara Hartshorn and Gabby William are a case of two contrasting health conditions. Following Gabby Williams slow ageing condition, where the body does not age normally, this story has brought another case (of Zara Hartshorn that was center of news headlines and featured a few years ago) to a fresh in the minds of many people and medical experts. Gabby’s condition is similar but opposite to another condition that was highlighted in the media channels in the past few years.

While Gabby is struggling with a slow ageing condition, on the other size, Zara Hartshorn has been struggling with a premature ageing condition where the body ages fast than it is supposed to. Gabby Williams does not grow old and although she is now 8 years, she only weights 5 kg and her skin looks like that of a newborn.

On the other hand, the story of a 15-year-old girl who looks like a 45-year-old woman was featured in news headlines in 2012. Zara Hartshorn suffers from a rare condition, which causes the body to prematurely age. While Gabby feels like a newborn despite her age, on the other hand, Zara feels aged despite her tender age.

Zara suffers from a rare condition known as cutis laxa and not lipodystrophy as earlier misdiagnosed. Zara Hartshorn was misdiagnosed with genetic form of lipodystrophy, but after proper diagnosis, it was established she suffers from cutis laxa, a rare genetic condition that causes the fatty and connective tissues ad well as bones under the skin to deteriorate leading to the appearance of extreme premature aging.

Before, doctors thought Zara was ailing from lipodystrophy, a condition in which the body fat is distributed in a way that it makes the person look and appear older than his true age. Zara and other women in their family seem to be aging before their time. Some have reported that their teeth fall out and have had to rely on collagen injections to combat wrinkles.

With lipodystrophy, because the fat deposits in other parts where it shouldn’t be allowed to deposit, other health complications may occur. The condition is very rare and affects only 1 in every 10 million people. Zara has gone through very difficult times where she has not enjoyed her childhood because other children mistreated her.

She has suffered from discrimination and self-denial but she has stood beyond the odds to break her silence about her condition. She has spoken publicly about her condition in an effort to raise awareness about this rare condition. She has been hoping that through the awareness campaigns, she would stop the bullying and discrimination she has gone through in her life.

Giving her thoughts in an interview with the Mirror, Zara said, “It’s impossible to get a child’s ticket at the cinema and when I wear my school uniform people think I’m in fancy dress.” She further said, “Growing up with lipodystrophy has been really hard.”

She can recall how other children in primary school mistreated her by calling her names like ‘baggy face’ and ‘granny’. Surely, this was a painful experience but she has gone beyond all odds to accept her condition and learn to live with it.
