A 5-Step Guide in Managing Stress

We all live with stress each day and although some people can manage it, others are not able to cope with it. The way you react to daily stressors will determine how you can manage it. In some people, stressors make them to experience stress symptoms like irritability, lack concentration, short-tempered, lack of sleep and even eating disorders. You may find that you are having troubles in attaining sufficient sleep. 

In other times, you do not sleep and wake up early in the morning with racing thoughts. You may even end up eating junk foods to counteract stress. The stress effects can be daunting and could lead to adverse health complications. Since you will most properly experience stress throughout your life, you need to learn how to manage the symptoms.

Five-step guide to help you cope with daily stressors

Step 1: Identify the cause of stress and try to steer clear of things, events, and circumstances that would trigger it.

Step 2: Talk to other people about the stress. When you tell your friends and family members, chances are that they will help you come in terms with the condition. It is not healthy to remain silent of a condition that is causing harm in your mental and physical health. You may also talk to therapist if the stress is too high.


Step 3: Spare some time in solitude. You need to garner inner strength and heal the emotions. You may consider going out for some recreating activities and this will try to nurture your inner self.


Step 4: Have limits with yourself. You should not accept things, tasks, or obligations that will wear you down. Before you engage in too many commitments, judge your inputs, capabilities, and abilities so that you do not get overwhelmed with responsibilities you cannot meet. Say no to things that you cannot do especially work and family related issues.


Step 5: Exercise your body to help increase the secretion of endorphins. These are natural substances produced in the brain and help bring feelings of calmness and peace. Exercise also enhances confidence and self-esteem thus reducing tension. Moreover, exercise can induce displacement defense mechanism where you do not think of things that may cause stress.


Stress can be managed if a person is able to identify the events, situations and activities that induce it. This is the first step in mitigating the effects of these ill-emotions. It should be noted that, stress itself is not perhaps bad, but the way the body and mind responds to it, is what determines its effects on the person. This is why people are affected differently by stress. 


There are those who persevere and are able to thrive well even under stress. On the other hand, there are those people who break down even with the slightest amount of stress. The secret behind managing stress is to learn to cope with it. Possibly, the most important thing to do is to accept and acknowledge that stress is part of life. 

Whereas, people can manage stress by avoiding the situations that trigger it, it is worthwhile noting that this may not be applicable in every aspect of life.  There are cases which can be avoided but others are extremely important to the persons' development and they cannot be denounced in order to avert stress, unless otherwise.

It vital to understand that apparently the most stressing events are the core personal development aspects, for instance, the job, family, and business related stress. It would look unreasonable to relinquish a job because one is stressed at workplace. 


Consequently, it does not make sense to shut down a business venture because it is stressing you. Moreover, one cannot forsake a family by claiming that it is stressing. Therefore, what does this imply? This means that, the most articulate and pertinent way to deal with stress is to accept it and learn to live with it. 

There are methods that have been tested and said to be effective in counteracting stress and its effects. These include physical and mental relaxation, imagery relaxation, and positive thinking. These are psychological approaches, which are essentially effective in managing stress symptoms. 

Nonetheless, stress levels may be too intense such that they can cause other complications such as depression and it is important to seek medical help from a certified doctor or a psychiatrist.
