Could Asia API Manufacturing Reduce the Cost of Drugs and Medicines?

Drug manufacturing is changing its shape as active pharmaceutical ingredient- API manufacturing shifts its market to the Asian countries such as Indian and China. This is due to the technological developments and expertise in biotechnology among pharma companies in these countries that has evolved in recently times, something that could see reduced prices of drugs and medicines.

APIs are individual substances or a mixture of substances, which are used to produce drugs or medicines. APIs are either manufactured through synthesis of the substances in laboratories, fermentation, or naturally extracted from natural resources.

India for example, has low production costs of active pharmaceutical ingredient- API drug manufacturing. It also has acquired complex synthesis capabilities and these coupled with the growing experience in current good manufacturing practices- cGMP, has created a lot of potentials for drug manufacturing. In addition, India has a strong chemistry and there are many PhDs that have been accredited from Europe and US.

India drug and medicine manufacturing companies are able to handle complex drug synthesis processes within a relatively short period of time. Furthermore, India has lenient patent laws, which have resulted to increased demand for finished-dose products and this has in turn given the API manufacturing firms in this country a great experience.

These developments have seen companies such as Pfizer begin to seek for manufacturers of some of their active pharmaceutical ingredients from the Asia countries. This is expected to impact on the drug and medicine manufacturing in that it may see the price of drugs substantially go down significantly enabling consumes to access cheap drugs.

Consumers may be able to get high quality drugs at relatively lower prices. The cost effective API production would help the drug manufacturing companies in US and Europe ease the burden that they get from the production process of the medicines and drugs.

This would eventually be passed on to the consumer by providing the medicines at competitive prices. The Food and Drug Administration- FDA has also been involved in such production outsourcing arrangement where much of the intermediary stages of API drug manufacturing are transferred to the Asian pharma companies.
